Alpha Cap M (as in Murray)

It also occurred to me that this could be an "MMT"
But I decided not to push it, since it's Christmas :-)

Journal Excerpt: Assistant Art Directing in1987

The production end of graphic design was
so drastically different back then.

When I graduated from Art School, I was hired
as the assistant art director, at Success! Magazine.
One of my responsibilities was to "order the display type."
Back in the day, headlines & decks were
set on a machine called a typositor.
Lettering Directions is the company we used,
and some sassy lady named Fran
was my contact there.
Sometimes she would say things like:
"Ach, we're so busy today, people are waking-up
from the dead & ordering type!"

Is Fran alive somewhere, dreaming of heads & decks?
Caps & Small caps?
Fran?

Snow Day...12/20/09

So many faces in the snow...

Currier, Ives & Herbert.

A change in direction.
Perhaps too late.

waiting...

...on pins & needles.

A selfless act...

Temporary suspension of varmint status.
(granted for shoveling Mina's steps.)

Great job, #1!

NYT Help Wanted, 1989

The frigid weather & threat of a weekend snowstorm
has me looking inward once again. Last winter, some of
were the most commented on, of all my posts.
This time, I'll start gently, with a help wanted ad,
saved from the New York Times.
How would my life be different today,
had I gotten this chic job?!
Where is the person who labored
over these tightly writ sentences?
Are they still creative directing somewhere?
Or have they been one of many lay-offs in the past 5 years?
Maybe they quietly slipped away to an upstate farm?

Skyline, 1982

I did this drawing in 1982.
I found it in Mom's house on Thanksgiving,
and smuggled it home in one of the varmint backpacks.
I can't stop looking at it:
1) for obvious 9/11 reasons
2) how the phuck did I ever have the patience to draw all those dots??
3) and umm... why does the hand have 6 fingers!!???
4) why would Art School admissions
allow me in, with a 6-digit hand?

The Devil is In the Details

As I wandered around my parents house on Thanksgiving,
I thought about all the details that were unique to their home.

This beautiful painting with embroidery
was in the bathroom in the house I grew up in.
In their current house, it's on prominent display.

In fact, there was embroidery everywhere.
When did women have the time to embroider things back then?

So while Dad played cards with the varmints,
I decided to do a house tour of my past.

Here's my Dad surrounded by his own varmints.
We were drowning in Huck-a-poo.
(nice cleavage, mom!)

Mom looking elegant in a long fitted plaid robe.

She named this dude "Hung Lo."
He still hangs out over the dining room table.

In this pic, I was obviously teething.
Why was I so happy?
I'm pretty sure they gave me a shot of cherry schnapps.

This was my kindergarten boyfriend.
Here he is holding my hand & whispering
naughty things to me before school.

This was the awkward phase.
Notice the bad hair, braces & yes, more embroidery.
We got that ski jacket on sale at Syms.

This is abdullah. He's made of some fancy hollow wood.
We always wondered if there were jewels hidden inside him.
Or drugs.

LOVE this old tile table.
When I was 3, I played a game where the yellow tiles
were scrambled eggs, for each place setting.

Here's my brother.
He convinced me that there
was a space elevator in his closet.
He often came back from space with cookies.

Saturday Night Pics

we snuck out for dinner with some local creative types...

(and who just might have a full account of the drinks,
the meal & the hilarity that ensued)

and those who have mod & covetous tables...

I snuck-up on two studies of black & white...

and still made it to bed way before midnight.
How was your saturday night?
