Last Looks at Magpie's House

I was completely absorbed by it's depth and beauty.
That was 3 years ago. Now it's finally been sold,
hopefully to a family that will love it as much as it's been loved before,
who will start to fill all those rooms with their own memories.

.
Good bye, solid, old beautiful house!

I will miss you and all of your contents.

And BTW.... WTF with this bear coat?
(Modeled here by Jean Martha.)

Wrapped sugar cubes.

Please come back to visit, Magpie!

Hurricane Sandy

She came and went. We lost power for 4 days, and we're still struggling with gas lines.
But we're safe.
Amen.

Cover Meeting

Back in the day, cover meetings were stressful.
4 suits would stand behind me looking at my mock-ups,
and they would say things like:
"Blah blah blah newsstand sales....
 Blah blah blah focus groups...
Blah blah blah..."

But this month, it was all:
"Should we put Paul McCartney on the cover, or The Cat Lady?"
And I said:
"The Cat Lady looks AWESOME!"

Yes, she does.

Time Capsule

 It happened again...
I got sucked back into Magpie's Mom's house.

She texts me: "I'm just packing some things up...wanna stop by?"

Next thing I know, I'm sitting on that giant porch,
heady with visions of playing jacks and sipping lemonade.

We moved some boxes. I wandered the hallways...
And this valise called out my name.
My fingers know exactly how the latches work.
My Mom had the same one.

I opened it.  We screamed.
I closed it.

It was an almost perfect time capsule from 1952.
There were doll clothes, hand sewn and crocheted.
Tiny booties, a hot water bottle, sweaters...

I pictured a girl, carefully packing these things
as she gets ready to leave her mother's house.
Starting her big girl life, with all of her little girl things.

Teofilo Olivieri

These paintings caught my eye on the street today.
Not just because they were brilliantly colored...
But it's as though they were in deep dialogue with eachother.

I stepped closer, and guess what??

Each one is painted on a book cover.
I fell in love!

There were so many... and I was so happy to see them,
that I got a little carried away snapping pics, and the artist yelled at me.
(Hope he forgives me now.)

Go to his FB page to see more...
Tell him the crazy lady sent you.

Laying Out Milton

I am beyond excited to be designing a new monthly magazine.
It's going to PRINT. On PAPER.
But I have to say...
it's a bit intimidating doing a spread on Milton Glaser.
I was a little afraid of him in art school,
and I'm still a little afraid now.
But the magazine is looking good,
and I can't wait to show it off when it's done!

What have youseguys been up to??
